Wanderers Clean up at Scottish Dinner

At the Annual Scottish Hockey Awards Dinner in Edinburgh the club managed to take home a large haul of silverware for their efforts throughout the season.

First up Becky Ward picked up the NL Div1 Indoor cup from competitions convenor Bill Garland, after Katie Still had reminded everyone of our 80 goal season and overthrowing of the old guard.

Next up were the individual awards and Iain Strachan was given Womens Coach of the Year with Vikki Bunce getting the prestigious Womens Player of the Year award. This award is chosen by the press writers and no doubt Vikkis 46 NL Indoor and 29 Outdoor goals went a long way to helping. Katie Still also reminded everyone that Vikki has had a very successful International year as well and scored against Chile and Malaysia in the recent World Cup Qualifier.

To round off the evening Wanderers were also awarded Team of the Year for the strides taken to finish 3rd in the Outdoor league, make the semis of the Scottish Cup and obviously winning the Indoor league.

Overall it was a great night, we took full advantage of the wine on the table and as the night ended, we loaded up the boot with our winnings and headed home to Bonny Dundee.

Sportsmans Dinner Speakers Confirmed

Willie a Lawyer and former UEFA referee is an accomplished wit, raconteur and established after dinner speaker and has entertained us before; Paulo di Canio of Celtic, once asked him during a game, if he ''wanted to be manager of Rangers?'' and Dick Advocaat of Rangers once accused him, during a game, of being ''a Celtic supporter''. These comments tend to suggest that he was fairly impartial.

George was arguably one of Britain’s greatest ever sprinters but outside the professional circuit was little known. In 1981 at the age of thirty four, he won the richest professional race in the world called 'The Stawell Gift' carrying a first prize of 12,000 Australian dollars together with around 40,000 dollars from the bookmakers.

His marvelous collection of anecdotes covers a wide range, not merely confined to his unique and highly successful sporting career.

This should be another great night so book early.

Ladies Sports Dinner Success

A massive thank you to everyone that contributed on the night. There was a great turn out with around 110 people in attendance. All communication so far was that the night was a great success, we raised over £3500, left with sore sides from laughing and bellies full with excellent food.

Thank you to June and Becky Ward for all the hard work they put into organising the night. The raffle prizes and auction items were also a success (with the top raffle prize in the shape of a home baked cake from Claire Hunter!) and a big than you to our "bouncers" for the evening, they did an excellent job collecting the pennies!

The speakers were excellent. Tom Dymock, led proceeds with experience and hilarity...he loved being the only male in attendance! Both Karen Bailey and Janice Phayre were beyond funny, they were hilarious!

Indoor National League Cancelled 4 / 5 Dec

With the snow all around those that matter have decided all hockey is off this weekend. Although some venues are playable it was decided that it was unsafe to ask teams to travel in these conditions. Competitions will be issuing a revised schedule some time next week.

No hockey better do some training!

The order left their base and is in Heathrow somewhere and they are confident it will be up here between Xmas and new year.

We will do our best to get it all sorted as quickly as possible and more news will appear here as soon as we have it. Keep checking for updates.

Ladies Retain Indoor Title

In the final games the girls strolled past Grove 2 with a 6 -1 victory after Grove 1 had defeated Western in the first game of the day. This meant that Western had to win the final game to take the league title whereas all we had to do was not get beat.

It was a tight game and had the crowd on the edge of there seats as we went onto the lead then they equalised. This was repeated to get it to 2 - 2 and we went into the half time break 3 - 2 up.The aim was then to kick on and score first but Western drew level and then took the lead for the first time in the match. This was the kick up the backside we needed and scored 3 great goals in 3 minutes to seal the game. They tried to fight back with a kicking back but were unable to break us down, and the season closed with 12 wins and 2 draws with a total of 130 goals scored. JOB DONE

Now we head off to Europe to compete for a place in the A division next year as we know we will be representing Scotland in 2012.

Ladies 2 Win Indoor NL 3

In their first season in the National League the Ladies 2 have lifted the leage title and get promotion to Div 2. Given that we only had one team until the start of this season and this team had never played together this is a massive result and will allow these players to play at a higher level and push for first team places.

The final game finished 6 - 2 with hat tricks for Morgan Hutchison and Jenny Gerrard and as a result the clubnow have 2 of the three womens NL titles.

Well done everyone.

Ladies off to European Indoor Champs

Off the back of a successful; defence of our league title the girls feel that they can finish top two in France and push themselves into the A division for next year.

The squad has a mixture of experience and some real young blood woth Morgan Hutchison and Jessica Ross both getting time off school to make the trip.

First up is the Danes and we are targetting the first game as a win then on Friday evening we play the French which will be our make or break game. Hopefully we will prevail and then its the Russians on Saturday morning and into the crossover games.

At this point its all or nothing so with a little luck and a lot of effort we will get the results we crave.

Girls win First Game

Ready for our first ever European game with high expectations the first few minutes were not as planned. Within 2 mins we were 1 - 0 down to a sloppy goal. Amy Rowan restored parity with a good goal but we again shot ourselves in the foot to go 2 - 1 down. We steadied the ship a little and 8 minutes later in the 13th minute Becky Ward brought it back to level. Two minutes later Rachel Osborne fired us into the lead from a good passing move and we went into half time with a slender lead.

We opened the scoring early in the second half with Amy making it 4 - 2 but immediately let it slip back to a single goal advantage. On 27 Vikki restored the 2 goal advantage and Amy increased it to 3 a few minutes later. This should have been the game sewn up but it was never really comfortable right to the end. They got 6 - 4 from poor defence but on 35 Vikki restored the 3 goal lead.

That was the catalyst for them to throw on the kicking back and with 90 secs remaining they managed to get it to 7 - 5 and on the final whistle they were awarded a corner. With a point to prove we saw it off for a 7 - 5 WIN.

5 points in the bag with the French up next. They managed a 6 - 1 win over the Russians so this will be the crunch game.

Girls Secure Medal Pool Games

Knowing that this was a 2 stage competition phase 1 was to secure a berth in the medal pool meaning we would have a shot at a medal and promotion to the top flight. We managed that this evening with a 3 - 0 win over the French. Because of the rules in this type of competition we are guaranteed a place in the promotion pool irrespective of what happens against the Russians in the morning. Coach Iain Strachan sees this as a real positive and a chance to play the younger members of the squad who are experiencing their first hockey on foreign soil. It is also a chance to rest those who have played long spells to get to this position and set us up for a massive game tomorrow night. In the other pool Arminen from Austria are through courtesy of 2 wins and if Leicester can beat the Czech's then they will also be there. Both these teams look very good.

This evening’s game was tight and although we looked most likely winners it was never really dead until the last minute or so. Only 1 - 0 up at the half was not enough and Heathers goal on the 28th minute eased the pressure her second on the 32nd minute pretty much secured the match. Her first goal was a belter; a flowing fast break finished with a reverse deflection had the crowd off their seats and when she was squared a ball wide of the keeper 4 minutes later she kept a cool head to finish. They threw on a kicking back but we held out for a clean sheet and a huge win for the club not only in this competition but also for the development of this team for the future.

Delighted and tired we thanked the support from home who only about 16 or so strong could be heard above the din of the French.

Tomorrow is another day and with nothing at stake in the morning game all eyes will become focussed on the Pool A games to determine who we play in the evening game.

Well as soon as we can we will let you know how it all went.

Merci Buckets

Final group game win in France

The final group game was a chance for the youngsters to get more court time and both Morgan Hutchison (16) and Jessica Ross (14) showed they are the future of the club. A slow start saw us go a goal down but the deflection queen, Heather deflected a ball over a diving keeper to end a nice passing move. Julie managed to put us into the lead but we gave away a soft goal to again level the scores. Not long before half time Vikki rounded the keeper and fired home for a 3 - 2 lead at the half.

A strong start to the second half saw us go 4 - 2 then 5 - 2 up through Vikki and Heather but a combination of knowing we were through and taking it easier for the next game let them claw their way back to 5 - 4.Amy dispelled any thoughts they had about getting level with a nice finish and despite them throwing on a KB we were safe to the end

Now the real tournament begins; we cannot be relegated but if we want promoted we will probably need to win both our next two games against a very good Austrian outfit and Leicester from England with heir 9 GB internationalists.

Bring it on

Girls go down to Arminen

This was the best game of the tournament so far and both sides put on a good show for the crowd. We typically went a goal down but Julie Bryce took a nice goal to level it soon after. A good 10 minutes followed where it was end to end but the Austrians managed to break the deadlock to take a 2 1 lead into the half.

The second half saw them get that vital first goal and open up a two goal cushion. Not deterred we won a series of corners to get back in the game and a beauty from Vikki sailed into the roof to bring it to a tight 3 2 game with about 4 to go. Try as we did we couldnt get that equalising goal and a last minute corner had promise but sailed just over the bar.

Our first defeat but all is not lost if we can win or draw against Leicester in the final game promotion will be ours.

Silver Medal and Promotion

This was all about not getting beat. They had a star studded line up but we were never phased by their superstars and showed no sign of nerves at all. A tight first half saw them take the lead from a short corner and we were denied an equaliser when Vikki rattled a penalty off the post. At half time the feeling was we were more than competing but had been unlucky.

The plan was simple we knew how to create chances we just had to take them. Amy Rowan did just that mid way through the second half finishing a planned move perfectly. From then on they threw everything at us knowing that a draw favoured us. Try as they might they just didnt have enough to break down our defence. CJ Becky and Carmin were all great at the back seiing them off time after time.

A brilliant day followed by a pretty good night and at the first time of asking we have joined the top flight of European Indoor hockey. Make no mistake its a big step up but bring it on. Anyone interested in a wee jolly to see some hockey??

Sports Ladies Dinner 29th October

We have been very fortunate to book the following speakers for this years dinner:

Jen Brister

After performing in front of the legendary Spike Milligan and receiving the luminous and prestigious title of having ‘a great pair of Bristols,’ Jen knew that comedy was the way forward. So with the help of two jokes and a push up bra she was on her way…

Since that heady day Jen has performed stand up in clubs all over the country (literally) as well as sketch comedy in numerous groups including the Loose Connection.

In 2006 she took up her first one woman show “Me My Mum & I” to the Edinburgh Festival where she recived excellent reviews. “Brister ticks all the boxes – she’s confident, energetic and knows how to deliver a line for maximum laughs”
THE SCOTSMAN

In 2007 Jen began working at BBC 6 Music where she presented a number of different shows including the weekend overnights, the weekend breakfast show and stand ins for Lauren Laverne, Liz Kershaw and Jon Holmes.

Jen also starred in Russell Brand & Trevor Lock’s ‘Cloud Cuckoo Land’ for BBC Radio 2.

In 2008 Brister teamed up with her comedy writing partner, Clare Warde to produce a two hand sketch comedy show called ‘Reception’ The Sunday Times applauded its “Bold sketches, surreal ideas and slick banter…keep an eye out” whilst The Stage highlighted “Two natural comic actors, the duo have an assured style and strong rapport that recalls the best of French and Saunders. This is one female double act that definitely deserves a promotion.”

In 2009 at the Edinburgh Festival Jen performed stand up at the Pleasance Cabaret Bar in the Comedy Zone as well as starring in Trevor Lock’s hilarious new play “The One & The Many”

She is currently writing a new solo show called, “Jen Brister is British(ish”) which she will be taking to the Adelaide & Melbourne Comedy Festivals in 2011, before heading once more to Edinburgh.

“Outrageously Funny”
Metro

“Gorgeously talented”
Tim Arthur, Time Out

Ruth has been writing comedy sketches and plays since she graduated in 2005 from Manchester Metropolitan University School of Theatre, where she studied acting.

Her comedy plays have been performed in numerous festivals including Sydney's 'Short & Sweet' Festival, Lost Theatre companies One Act Festival, Buxton Fringe and Edinburgh Fringe.

Reviews
"Both clever & hilarious in style" Edfringe review

"Ruth Cockburn, the second act, was in my opinion the best of the night,... She does something the best comedians do; finds material that the audience recognises from their own lives, and simultaneously makes them realise how foolish they are whilst being comforted that they aren't the only ones who do it. In addition to telling jokes, she splits up her act with songs which, besides being as hilarious as the rest of the routine, were also both catchy and well played/sung. I could have happily carried on watching this watchable performer" Andy Howell, Barrel of laughs Buxton

"HIGHLY RECOMMENDED" Stoon Buxton Fringe

"Ruth's comedy is a particularly potent mix of spot-on, slightly surreal social commentary and brilliantly inventive, hummable and instantly hilarious songs." Spotlight Comedy

Remember - book your tickets soon as there is only a limited number of seats. All Ladies club members friends and family are welcome. As anyone that attended last year - it was a hoot!

Coaches Required

As a club we are short of a number of coaches and anyone who fancies taking on a role within the club as a coach should put their name forward in the first instance to Iain Strachan

The most exciting of these opportunities will be with the ladies 2s. After many years hard work Jenny has decided to keep it local and is stepping down to the 3s this season. She has been a stalwart for many years and we all hope she has a great season with the 3s.

Seriously, coaching can be very rewarding so if your playing career is in decline and you fancy a new challenge then this is a good way to stay competative.

Scottish Hockey Survey

Dear Member

Scottish Hockey is carrying out a survey, aimed at understanding more about member involvement at different stages in their life. As a valued member of Scottish Hockey we would be grateful for your input and ask that you take 5-10 minutes to take part in the survey.

The survey will give us a better understanding of our members and, in particular, how they are introduced to hockey and develop in the sport. Based on the results we can then focus our energies into more effectively retaining and supporting members and also look at ways to encourage new members.

By clicking on the link below you will be taken to the survey operated by an independent website called Survey Monkey, once there simply follow the onscreen instructions. Should you have any problems completing the survey, please do not hesitate to contact memberprofilesurvey@scottish-hockey.org.uk

Click here to take the survey

Please note only over 16’s can take part in the survey.

Scottish Hockey would like to thank you in advance for helping us improve the game.
